Garden

Te Mara Kotahitanga

Every week our students have time in the Te Mara Kotahitanga, the school’s Unity Garden, learning about soil preparation, planting, weeding, harvesting seasons, and all of the elements necessary to create and upkeep a successful garden.

This is supported by a gardener from The Remakery (Common Unity Project Aotearoa).

Epuni School Garden

Our Community Garden is located alongside our field, behind the school buildings. It has several large garden beds which are used throughout the year for growing in season vegetables. At the southern end of the garden is an orchard with various fruit trees.
We have compost bins situated throughout the garden, as well as three worm farms which are fed with fruit and food scraps from the classrooms.

Tuesdays

Every Tuesday morning during the school term, Epuni School focuses its learning around the garden. Each class heads into the garden for half an hour and learns about different plants, vegetables, fruits and works to maintain and grow the garden throughout the year.

Classes are supported with a gardener from the Common Unity Project, as well as community gardeners Captain Wiggles and our caretaker Don.

We would love more help and assistance on Tuesdays from any parents who have an interest or passion in the garden. Please get in touch with your child’s teacher, or the school office if you are able to help and support our classes in the garden.

Saturdays

Tui

Every fine Saturday, the garden is open to the community to come and assist with maintaining the plots. We have several regulars and assistance from Common Unity to run these sessions. The session runs from 10am until 2pm and we welcome anyone who can help out during that time. Please come for as much or as little as you can manage during the open hours.
